lyrics

You, you don't know who I am,
I bet you don't even know my name.
But since you're sitting at the bar anyway,
Would you please just listen to me sing?

This is a song about a little known musician
Who can't seem to break out of small town Massachusetts
And she's doing it on her own
First year of college with no job, no contacts in her phone...

But if she had a dime
For every single time that they said she'd make it
Then she would be rich
And she would have made it a long time ago.

If she had the time to set aside her life,
She would do it in a second
But she is caught in this trap,
And all that's left ... is music.

Well, everywhere she looks there's just another singer out there
And Daddy's wrapped around their fingers
Making phone calls

And her parents try to be supportive
Because they feel like they're forced to
She knows that deep inside they wonder why she wastes her time
Singing her stupid tunes

Well, if she had an "in" maybe she would win,
But she hasn't found it yet.
She wasn't born into this
And she's worked day and night since

She was thirteen, and she had a dream,
And she picked up a guitar.
They all tell her she will be a star
But it never happened.

Will it ever happen?
They swear it will happen...

If I had a dime
For every single time that they've said I'd make it
Then, I would be rich
And I would have made it a long time ago

If I had the time
To set aside my life
I would do it in a second
But I am caught in this trap

In Massachusetts...

If I had an "in" maybe I would win,
But I haven't found it yet
I wasn't born into this
And I've worked day and night since

I was thirteen and I had a dream
And I picked up a guitar
They all tell me I will be a star,
But it never happened

And you...
You don't know who I am.
You probably still don't know my name.

But since you're sitting at the bar anyway,
I guess you have to listen to me sing.
